Emergency Shelter may become a great need due to Hurricane Sandy

Monday, October 29th, 2012

HurricanSandy1 300x264 Emergency Shelter may become a great need due to Hurricane SandyEmergency Shelter is a big consideration as Hurricane Sandy lurches towards the land.   One of the most immediate and important needs after disaster strikes is safe, reliable, portable and efficient shelter.  First response and disaster management organizations worldwide are discovering that geodesic domes are ideal for emergency relief and disaster shelters. Domes provide the safety you need in emergency scenarios, quickly and without hassle.  Domes are easy-to-use, multi-purpose structures that solve immediate problems–keeping people dry, comfortable and safe. Domes are ideal for emergency shelters, command headquarters, housing, medical stations, supply storage and more.

Geodesic domes are the strongest structure yet devised by humans. The geodome’s architecturally engineered strength provides housing for those that are displaced, or provides effective care facilities. Their ultimate durability has proven that domes are the safest structure in earthquakes and can withstand hurricanes, tornadoes, heavy snow loads, and more. DomeGuys dome covers are waterproof, windproof, UV-protected and fire-retardant.

www.ready.gov gives this advice if you are in an active hurricane situation:

During a Hurricane

If a hurricane is likely in your area, you should:

  • Listen to the radio or TV for information.
  • Secure your home, close storm shutters and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.
  • Turn off utilities if instructed to do so. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.
  • Turn off propane tanks
  • Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.
  • Moor your boat if time permits.
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other larger containers with water.
  • Find out how to keep food safe during and after and emergency.

You should evacuate under the following conditions:

If you are directed by local authorities to do so. Be sure to follow their instructions.

  • If you live in a mobile home or temporary structure – such shelter are particularly hazardous during hurricane no matter how well fastened to the ground.
  • If you live in a high-rise building – hurricane winds are stronger at higher elevations.
  • If you live on the coast, on a floodplain, near a river, or on an island waterway.

Read more about evacuating yourself and your family. If you are unable to evacuate, go to your wind-safe room. If you do not have one, follow these guidelines:

  • Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.
  • Close all interior doors – secure and brace external doors.
  • Keep curtains and blinds closed. Do not be fooled if there is a lull; it could be the eye of the storm – winds will pick up again.
  • Take refuge in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest level.
  • Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.
  • Avoid elevators.

We are sending our love and highest intentions to all of those bracing for the storm tonight.

Disaster Strikes…Be Prepared With A DGI Dome /

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

No matter what time of year, people regularly face the destructive forces of nature. Nature is indiscriminate when it comes to earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, mudslides, gale-force winds, sand-storms, and flash floods. Just this week, over two dozen homes were damaged by a tornado that rolled through small towns south of San Antonio, Texas, and a devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake rocked Guerrero and Oaxaca, Mexico destroying over 2,000 homes.

In response to these kinds of natural disasters, DomeGuys International provides Disaster Relief domes. Geodesic domes are an excellent solution to whatever Mother Nature throws at us. Domes offer excellent, immediate emergency shelter in the wake of a disaster. Geodesic domes are resilient structures that hold up under high winds and heavy loads. They are quick to assemble and disassemble, providing a quick and easy solution in a devastated area.

Not currently affected by a natural disaster, but want to be prepared in the event of one? Geodesic domes store well, using a minimal amount of space. Keep a dome on hand in the event that disaster strikes, or set it up now as your survival outpost.

The Mother Earth News Fair is partnering with DomeGuys International!

The Mother Earth News Fair takes place June 4-5, 2011, at the Puyallup Fairgrounds outside of Seattle. We are ecstatic to announce DomeGuys International will be partnering with Mother Earth News to be a part of their Mother Earth News Fair! The Mother Earth News Fair website describes the fair as a “sustainable lifestyle event” with “dozens of practical, hands-on demonstrations and workshops.” There will be information on “renewable energy, small-scale agriculture, gardening, green building, green transportation and natural health.”

The Mother Earth News Fair will also have organic beverages, a beer and wine garden and a silent auction. They will feature alternative energy vehicles and videos on logging and restorative forestry. Attendees are invited to participate in the Fair. They can “make home-baked bread in home-made ovens, swap seeds with local gardeners. You can also “experience small-space living and watch artists bring farm animals to life on the canvas.” The Fair has teamed with many local businesses to help attendees “save on great deals from dozens of regional and national vendors featuring sustainable lifestyle products and services, including books, tools, seeds, crafts, organic foods, clothes, solar gadgets and more!”

This year we are sending a 36′ Earth Print geodesic dome to the Mother Earth News Fair to act as the”welcome center.” All speaker, exhibitor and press registration will take place in our dome! This dome is no stranger to events. It has made appearances at the Go Green Expo in 2009, The Oregon Green Expo in 2010, and the Sensorium event in Washington D.C. last month!

We hope to see you and your family there! If you can’t make it, don’t worry. There will be a Mother Earth News Fair in Marin County, California and Seven Springs, Pennsylvania in September. If you happen to go the fair, be sure to take some pictures of our geodesic dome and send them our way!

30 Home Dome front door 300x225 5 Reasons to Buy a Geodesic Home Dome

Home Dome

  1. Geodesic home domes are quick to construct. Even a very large dome – say, 60’ in diameter – can be constructed in a matter of a few days. They are deconstructed in half the time, and when disassembled are compact enough to fit into the back of a pickup truck.
  2. Geodesic home domes are built to last and designed to handle hurricane-force winds, large earthquakes and heavy snowstorms. A living dome is a very safe place to be in the case of a natural disaster. The frame can be custom engineered to meet the specific requirements of your local planning department.
  3. Geodesic home domes are durable. The open-air theater in Elpse, Germany is made of the same architectural fabric commonly used in dome construction today, and has been up since the 70’s. The geodesic dome is said to be the strongest, most economical lightweight structure in the world.
  4. Home domes are less expensive than standard homes. Dome construction requires very few building materials, and fewer materials translates to lower building costs. Additionally, energy costs stay low due to the curved interior which allows for optimal air circulation.
  5. The geodesic dome cover can be made to fit your unique personality. The cover is literally a blank canvas which can be designed to discreetly blend in to the background, or to be a stand out, personalized statement. At no additional cost you can incorporate windows and skylights into the design, to bring the outdoors into your living room.

The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan was devastating and our hearts go out to our neighbors there. We would like to do what we can to help. We are offering greatly reduced prices on disaster relief shelter domes for use in Japan as our contribution to relief efforts. Domes make excellent temporary housing for disaster relief. They are lightweight, portable, versatile, strong and easy to construct. Our 20′, 24′ and 30′ domes can be built without heavy equipment or power, and provide 300-700 square feet of indoor space. These shelters can be used to meet the high need for housing, medical facilities, kitchens, orphanages, birthing centers, and more. They  can also be dismantled, re-constructed and moved as needed.

Due to the nature of their construction, these disaster relief shelter domes require minimal materials that are greatly condensed for shipping and offer maximum strength once erected. Our domes stand up to earthquakes, hurricane-force winds, are very resilient and offer a safe multi-use structure that will only take 4-6 hours to assemble. Our frames have been independently tested and all covers are fire retardant, offer a 15-20 year life expectancy, and are UV protected.
