Summer Is Ready When You Are /

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Now I’m humming The Breeders, back from those early days of Lollapalooza…At the time, Lollapalooza was a new kind of festival. It promised a weekend of popular music that crossed genres, include experiential non-music features, and, in the early 90′s, brought the festival to towns across the nation. A touring festival was a new concept and proved to lose its viability. Now festivals rely on the participants to travel, and many festival-goers tour, hopping from one festival to the other following their favorite bands, or the eternal summer offered by the music festival experience. In many respects, it paved the way for the festival’s we recognize today, which for the West Coast include  Bumpershoot, Sasquatch, High Sierra, Burning Man, and Coachella.

For many, Coachella Music Festival marks the kick-off of the Summer festival season. Though there are plenty of festivals that happen throughout the year, by the time Coachella is in full swing people are ready to hit the festival circuit, collecting their array of wristbands along the way.

And, I’m happy to report that this includes DomeGuys!

While the misty rain collects around us here in Southern Oregon, it’s easy to get lost reminiscing about warm summer nights spent dancing to our favorite bands (under the canopy of one of our domes, of course!). While Coachella may not be bringing back their Dome stage, it remains a highlight of many people’s experiences…and a hot topic on Coachella’s forum. It’s also one of the highlight’s for us here at DGI.

Of course, much buzz this year has centered on the ticketing fiasco for Burning Man, where over 40% of the ticket buyers who registered for the lottery had never been to the event before. Over here at DGI, we’re veterans of Black Rock City, having participated and provided geodesic domes for theme camps, projects, and venues for years. And we’ll be doing it again in 2012!

In 2010, we built a 36-foot blackout dome for EyezOnVegas. It was a particularly awesome venue because the blackout cover blocked out the hot desert sun, making it a great place for music throughout the day, complete with a light show and projections. Check out our time-lapse video of the construction:

Needless to say, this dome was an epic success. Since then, blackout domes have become increasingly popular on the playa, and DGI supplied at least two for the 2011 festival. A lot of domes last year went to private theme camps, who used 20 – 36 foot domes to provide needed camp shade, kitchens, and dressing areas. When constructed properly (as we always do), DGI domes are secure from even the most veracious dust storm, and with one of our event covers fitted to the frame, you can create a dust-free space in the midst of the playa. Imagine that!?!

So, while you prepare your theme camp registrations (due by April 26) and as you layout your camp designs, don’t forget to include a dome! Contact DomeGuys International to make your camp the best it can be with a geodesic dome! You may even find something to suit your needs in our In-Stock Deals…Check it out!

And now…courtesy of my reminiscing, I give you The Breeders…Summer is ready when you are!

90' Geodesic Dance Dome

Paula Abdul made her big comeback with Live to Dance, a new dance TV show filmed… in a DomeGuys 90′ geodesic dome. Paula was joined in the judges panel by Travis Payne, famous choreographer, and Kimberly Wyatt, former member of Pussycat Dolls. Andrew Gunsberg, from Australian Idol, hosted the $500,000 talent competition, searching for America’s next top dance act, modeled after Britain’s Got to Dance.

Reveille Productions and Paula chose DomeGuys International to manufacture and construct 90′ and 30′ dance domes in both New York and Los Angeles for the bi-coastal filming locations. The DomeGuys team worked around the clock to meet the tight deadline, so dancers from all walks of life could show the world their moves.
