Getting set up: DomeGuys International 44' Earthprint Dome

DomeGuys International provides geodesic Domes all around the world – such as China, Tokyo, and Canada, but this summer we were thrilled to equip our neighbors, the State of Jefferson Music Festival & Hemp Expo with a 44′ Earth Print Event Dome!  Their third annual event in 2012 was a great success!  We are so happy for them and are delighted that this beautiful Dome (which can also function as an Emergency Shelter) has found a home that is close to home!

For those who are not familiar with the concept of “State of Jefferson”, it is a project, reaching its zenith in 1941 that is comprised of Citizens in the counties of southern Oregon and northern California declaring separation form their respective home states and joining to form a new state given the name Jefferson, for Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. (source: Jefferson Statehood Project). But I digress…

The mission of the State of Jefferson Music Festival & Hemp Expo is to host a world class music event that provides outlets for cannabis advocates to educate the public on the many potential benefits and uses of the cannabis plant. This includes religious, medicinal, industrial, agricultural, economic, environmental, and other practical applications.

Here is a hemp fact or two you may not know:

Eco-friendly hemp can replace most toxic petrochemical products. Research is being done to use hemp in manufacturing biodegradable plastic products: plant-based cellophane, recycled plastic mixed with hemp for injection-molded products, and resins made from the oil, to name a very few examples. Over two million cars on the road today have hemp composite parts for door panels, dashboards, luggage racks, etc. (source: Hemp Industries Association, Hemp Fact #10)

Hemp fiber paper resists decomposition, and does not yellow with age when an acid-free process is used. Hemp paper more than 1,500 years old has been found. Hemp paper can also be recycled more times than wood-based paper. (source: Hemp Industries Association, Hemp Fact #8)

So, thank-you to all the good folks who were part of this year’s festival.  We are glad that we also got to be a part of the movement!!

Summer Is Ready When You Are /

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Now I’m humming The Breeders, back from those early days of Lollapalooza…At the time, Lollapalooza was a new kind of festival. It promised a weekend of popular music that crossed genres, include experiential non-music features, and, in the early 90′s, brought the festival to towns across the nation. A touring festival was a new concept and proved to lose its viability. Now festivals rely on the participants to travel, and many festival-goers tour, hopping from one festival to the other following their favorite bands, or the eternal summer offered by the music festival experience. In many respects, it paved the way for the festival’s we recognize today, which for the West Coast include  Bumpershoot, Sasquatch, High Sierra, Burning Man, and Coachella.

For many, Coachella Music Festival marks the kick-off of the Summer festival season. Though there are plenty of festivals that happen throughout the year, by the time Coachella is in full swing people are ready to hit the festival circuit, collecting their array of wristbands along the way.

And, I’m happy to report that this includes DomeGuys!

While the misty rain collects around us here in Southern Oregon, it’s easy to get lost reminiscing about warm summer nights spent dancing to our favorite bands (under the canopy of one of our domes, of course!). While Coachella may not be bringing back their Dome stage, it remains a highlight of many people’s experiences…and a hot topic on Coachella’s forum. It’s also one of the highlight’s for us here at DGI.

Of course, much buzz this year has centered on the ticketing fiasco for Burning Man, where over 40% of the ticket buyers who registered for the lottery had never been to the event before. Over here at DGI, we’re veterans of Black Rock City, having participated and provided geodesic domes for theme camps, projects, and venues for years. And we’ll be doing it again in 2012!

In 2010, we built a 36-foot blackout dome for EyezOnVegas. It was a particularly awesome venue because the blackout cover blocked out the hot desert sun, making it a great place for music throughout the day, complete with a light show and projections. Check out our time-lapse video of the construction:

Needless to say, this dome was an epic success. Since then, blackout domes have become increasingly popular on the playa, and DGI supplied at least two for the 2011 festival. A lot of domes last year went to private theme camps, who used 20 – 36 foot domes to provide needed camp shade, kitchens, and dressing areas. When constructed properly (as we always do), DGI domes are secure from even the most veracious dust storm, and with one of our event covers fitted to the frame, you can create a dust-free space in the midst of the playa. Imagine that!?!

So, while you prepare your theme camp registrations (due by April 26) and as you layout your camp designs, don’t forget to include a dome! Contact DomeGuys International to make your camp the best it can be with a geodesic dome! You may even find something to suit your needs in our In-Stock Deals…Check it out!

And now…courtesy of my reminiscing, I give you The Breeders…Summer is ready when you are!

Homes don’t need to be big and homes don’t need to be square. Using a design based on nature’s constructing principles, Buckminster Fuller re-designed the geodesic dome into the multi-use structure we know and love today. Geodesic domes provide an uplifting and inspiring dwelling that is efficient, cost-effective, eco-friendly, and structurally sound.

Geodesic domes offer a lightweight and stable design for small living. Using little in the way of equipment to construct, the frame of a small 16’ dome can fit in the back of a pickup truck and can be set up in a matter of hours using only a ladder. A viable alternative to traditional construction, a dome is a sustainable investment that eliminates much of the environmental impact caused by home building. They require minimal surface area, and can be constructed for permanence on a wooden platform foundation.

The versatility of domes provides something for everyone. They’ve even been used for disaster relief and emergency shelters. I’ve encountered domes at events, as spaces for performance and art, and as temporary structures providing shade and shelter. If you’re someone who enjoys living in an uplifting and inspiring dwelling, domes could be a great option for you.

In July 2011, Adey Garner bought her 20’ dome from DomeGuys International to serve as her music studio and living space. Along with the professional team from DGI, she put together her dome in less than 3 hours! She customized her space with a bay window, insulation panels for temperature control, and her baby grand piano. Adey says, “Acoustically, playing the piano in the center of the dome is incredible. And with the zip- off bay window, I have a built-in amphitheatre! Since the dome skin is made of vinyl-coated canvas, there is not a lot to block the sound coming in or out. However, recording is not impossible, and I’m enjoying the quality of life that it adds to the tracks.”

Keeping a piano in the space means maintaining temperature and humidity. The space stays comfortable with 100 custom-cut Styrofoam triangles that fit between the dome struts, floor insulation, and heavy polar fleece curtains. While you can opt to add a wood stove to your dome home, Adey chose to use a radiator heater to keep the space warm during Southern Oregon winters. In the summer, the placement of her dome between two giant willow trees does a great job of providing shade. Without the piano to consider, a nice box fan paired with the “roll-up” windows allow enough airflow to keep the space comfortable in the hotter months.

DGI domes are temporary, cost effective, eco friendly, and beautiful. Adey adds that “the most inspiring thing about my dome is the feeling of being in a sphere; it’s almost indescribable how I perceive my surroundings. I’ve been living in right-angled structures my whole life without giving too much attention to how the shape of my house affects my mood, my creative process, and my life. Now I am becoming more aware of the fact that the space we’re enclosed by, greatly influences everything we do and how we go about doing it. Living and working in this dome is my aesthetic dream—it is filled with light and open space, and the feeling of unlimited potential.”

Why we love working in the world of geodesic domes . . .

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Here in the Geodesic Dome world of DomeGuys we get to work with a cool cross section of clients.  It’s what makes the job great – aside from the fact that we get to see these awesome structures pop up and stimulate these rad experiences for people in all kinds of different situations- people like this drop in and make it happen:

How Did You Hear About Us?: Freeway sign

Comments: a fine how do you do

—So I’ve been seeing your dome and sign on the I-5 for the last 5 months. I read Bucky Fullers critical path long ago and it along with a slew of other “alternate” publications helped transform me from the selfish destructive juvenile heathen I was, into the productive, thoughtful, generous, energetic, conscious creating, evolutionary lunatic I am as I write this!!

So after fifteen years of walking the path of riotousness and what not, I finally have been blessed with a little piece of dirt where I believe I can truly make a little mini tiny bit more difference than I’ve been able to muster thus far. I speak of golden mean pyramids with mighty SHASTA views (there is NO obstruction between Shasta and the prop besides 3 miles of burnt junipers and hwy 97) open to the public for free healing and meditation! With complementary magic H20 schlepped from the headwaters and then energized within the pyramid! (I’m sure you’ve seen the amazing things on pyrmidoflife.com or org I cant remember) —– anyways along with the domes, obelisks, meditation paths, disco balls and dance floors this spiritual retreat slash fledgling green community needs GREEN HOUSES.

Obviously that’s where you come in.

After reading up your site I checked the bio page and on top of being sweet geodesic dome builders you’re a bunch of artist healer, music junkie, medicine supporters who I’m way down to do business with. Also the only reason I bothered with any of the personal info – I figure you may appeal to my cause (as well as my location) So hear is the deal, I need a green house up for this season (2 months from now max) that can withstand savage winds. I have a budget of up to ten thousand dollars installed. I need room for my count of twenty-five tomato bushes so you do the math on how much space I need and if my budget is feasible??? I am highly interested in being part of the construction process if this would be possible and maybe offset some labor costs, (as a business owner I feel licensed to claim, I have found few men who can, and more importantly will work as hard as I do) I am a master roofer extraordinaire as well as an ex screen-printing ink slinger – I ran print operation from 2001 – 2003- also I’ve been known to tote the techniques and big speakers out! But would honestly prefer to just dance for twelve hours straight.
