Johan Ziems (aka The Dome Guy) was born in 1974, in Weimar, Germany. Weimar is located only fifteen minutes from Jena where the first steel dome was built by Carl Zeiss in 1922. Johan theorizes that proximity began his dome legacy. Johan is and continues to be a pioneer in the world of dome production, design, and engineering, providing domes worldwide. As a teenager, Johan began reading about Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic principles and inventions. Moving to the United States in 1991, he furthered pursued his interest in domes. In 1994, he moved into a 16’ dome in Oregon, where he fell in love with the dome as a living space. Over the next few years, he worked with others to develop a dome company on the West Coast, and in 1998 built the first 36’ dome in Austin, Texas. Later that year, he delivered and helped built ten, 16’ domes for the victims of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras.
Inspired by the potential of the dome, possibilities for size continued to grow in Johan’s mind. In 1998, he built the first dome for the Burning Man Festival, a beautiful 36’ structure which now, 10 years later, is a common structure at the festival. Then in 2000 he awed spectators at Burning Man by erecting the first 44’ dome. Later that year, Johan was hired by Leonardo DiCaprio to build the first dome-inspired celebrity New Years party in Los Angeles. In 2005, Johan partnered with Rutger Jansen from Blixxem Event Support BV www.blixxem.nl and started manufacturing domes in Europe with their Dutch-based company, Domes Europe www.domeseurope.com, fulfilling his plans of carrying his company worldwide.
The entertainment industry has become familiar with Johan’s production capabilities and he has, in turn, been dubbed “The Dome Guy.” Johan has worked with such distinguished clients such as Thievery Corporation, Perry Farrell, Alicia Keys, Mass Music Dome -
